In a recent post, we saw how to very easily play 5-note groupings with both hands, simply because when it comes down to it, the whole thing is just one big aural illusion.

In this example, we’ll see how to play 7-note groupings with both hands.

As with the 5-note example, I used the iPhone app PolyRhythm to hear and see the pattern. It’s re-written in 7/4 to make it easier to conceptualize.

If you set the PolyRhythm app to a slow tempo, you can play along and really “get” the sound  and shape of the patterns. From there, you have go back and LISTEN CLOSELY to the :2, :3 and :4 note groups, because those are ultimately the foundations you’ll be building off of.

As always, credit must go to PolyRhythm app developer Wolfram Winkel, whose contribution to the exploration of polyrhythms has really opened some doors. As I’ve said before, it’s the best .99 cents you’ll ever spend!
